Lifestyle and Living in Port Carling

Muskoka Lakes is a cottage country hotspot because of its easy access to a variety of recreation activities. Anchored by a few larger communities like Port Carling and Bala, you will find a balanced mixture of waterfront properties, and rural, and country settings.

As you enter Port Carling you will see the famous mural made of over 9000 pictures that create the image of the RMS Sagamo. If you view it up close, you can see that each photo captures a moment of time in the lives of residents of Port Carling. The permanent population of Port Carling is around 300 people, but triples in size during the summer months with seasonal residents. As you drive through the town you will see many cottage properties along the lake, as well as single-family homes with larger lots.

There is only one school local to Port Carling, the Glen Orchard Public School. Students in high school are bussed to the nearby Town of Bracebridge to attend Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School. Those wanting a Catholic School option must also travel to Bracebridge to attend the elementary school Monsignor Michael O’leary Catholic School or St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School.

The Muskoka Lakes Preschool is one of the only childcare options in and around Port Carling. They have a mixed age group program that is structured with indoor and outdoor activities that will foster language things like development, problem-solving, and social awareness  

There is plenty of green space to enjoy around the community. Hanna Park is one of the most popular parks, especially during the summer. There’s a small beach here and you can swim in the lake, there’s a playground for kids, volleyball and basketball courts, a pavilion, and tables for picnics.

If you enjoy walking Port Carling has a couple of different trails for you to enjoy. The Port Carling Mural Walk takes you along the Indian River through downtown Port Carling. It’s a total of 2.5 kilometers long and all one level, making it an accessible walk for everyone. The Hazelwood Trail however is a little more of a challenging hike which includes some steep climbs through mature hardwood forest and passing between the granite bluffs. This trail is also used during the winter for snowshoeing by many locals.

Port Carling is known for its Winterfest which happens annually during the first weekend of February. This is a family-oriented winter carnival that takes place at the Port Carling Arena, Hanna Park, and the town’s Community Centre. Here you will find a variety of local artisan vendors showcasing their products, as well as food and games for children.

ecause Port Carling is situated along the Indian River and surrounded by Silver Lake, water sports are a popular activity in this area. There is a couple of different boat docks and launches close to the downtown area for those who enjoy boating. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular activities as the river provides beautiful scenery as you ride along.  

Downtown Port Carling is vibrant during the summer months with residents and cottagers alike out enjoying the variety of local shops and restaurants. The downtown is known as the “hub of the lakes” because of its diversity and access to many activities like a cruise around the lakes in a wooden antique boat. If you’re looking for a great place to eat with a great patio, Tulo’s Taqueria has the best Mexican food in the area. They provide a relaxed atmosphere, and their patio is situated on the Indian River providing the perfect relaxed summer evening.

Port Carling is a great place to invest in a second home property or cottage, because of its quick access to a variety of recreation activities. The town is small but charming, providing the perfect escape from the busy city lifestyle.
