As you drive through the Town of Midland you will see older more established neighborhoods with tree-lined streets featuring Victorian-era homes interspersed with newer areas that showcase the decades with townhomes, detached homes, and condo options.
The Town of Midland will see much growth over the next several years with many new developments happening. The Bay Resort development is a new luxury condo living development by Kaitlin Corporation. Currently, in its pre-construction phase, residents will have a variety of amenities to enjoy within the building. Adults can enjoy an indoor and outdoor pool, gym, and tennis court. For kids, there will be a play and activity area inside and outside.
There are a variety of school options within Midland for elementary and high school-aged students. Some elementary schools are Bayview Public School, Huron Park Public School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, and Monsignor Castex Catholic School. Local high school options are Georgian Bay District Secondary School and St. Theresa’s Catholic High School.
Traveling to Midland is only two hours away from Toronto and can be accessed by Highway 93 from Highway 400. For residents who depend on public transportation, Midland has a Linx Simcoe County bus that provides two different transportation options out of town. Route one provides service every 60 minutes from Penetanguishene to Barrie. Stops will include the Midland mall, Royal Victoria Hospital, and Georgian College. Route six provides an hourly service from Midland to Orillia. In addition, the city also provides a local public transit system with nearby town Penetanguishene having two routes move about the town either going North or South. The bus stop for these routes is located at the Midland Public Library.
During the summer months, the town sees an abundance of tourism and has become increasingly popular for people to own cottages on Georgian Bay as it provides lots of opportunities for boaters and adventurers. It’s also important to note that Midland has plenty of green space throughout the city and its neighborhoods. Little Lake Park Beach has a ton of green space perfect for families to enjoy picnics during the summer and the kids will have plenty of space to play. A second park in the city is Pete Patterson Park which is a popular public swimming area, and it also has a boat launch.
Having close access to various walking trails is important to individuals when they’re relocating to a new town. The Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail connects Tay Shore Trail from Ste. Marie Among the Hurons. It travels through Ste. Marie Park and along the residential waterfront to Midland Town Dock and downtown. In total, this trail is eight kilometers long and showcases some beautiful views along the way at Edgehill Park.
There is also plenty of kid’s activities in the town like the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre. Home to a diverse array of species, this is a great place to visit with kids for an educational experience. The center also provides educational programs for kids on and off-site that focus on learning about the natural life around us. Inside the park, there’s a trail that’s open to the public to enjoy that travels through the woodlands and wetlands. In addition to their summer hiking trails, in the Wintertime the Graham Macdonald Snowshoe Trail is available exclusively for snowshoers.
In addition, the Midland is home to North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre that holds two ice pads, and is a multi-purpose facility. There is a variety of skating programs for kids, and it also has a double gym that hosts a variety of co-ed programs like basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer.
Downtown Midland is the place to be for local shopping and dining. The vibrant area is filled with painted murals that cover the side of buildings depicting various important moments in Midland’s history painted by local artists. All major amenities are located within the downtown area. There are a variety of unique local businesses from clothing to home décor, spas, galleries, groceries, and business essentials. Uncle Roy’s Restaurant is a popular local restaurant located along King Street that cooks Canadian and Chinese food. It also has an all-day breakfast for those who enjoy a good brunch.
Lastly, Midland hosts the famous annual Butter Tart Festival. Created in 2013 this festival has grown significantly over the years. Each year over 65 thousand people attend to try and taste a wide array of different butter tarts made by more than 200 different vendors. The last year the festival was able to run, they sold over 150 thousand butter tarts. There is also a contest open to vendors whether they are professionals or amateurs, and celebrities, chefs, food and travel bloggers, and local dignitaries are asked to judge. In addition, there are tons of family activities, entertainment, and other local vendors to check out.
