Gateway to Muskoka.

Gravenhurst

Muskoka starts in the Township of Gravenhurst. As you drive up north, the rocks start cropping up as you approach the Canadian Shield. In 1859, the Muskoka Road construction started leading from Washago to Gravenhurst.  Gravenhurst was incorporated in 1877 with a population of  850. Now, just over 12,000 people call this hub home.

Living in Gravenhurst

Known as the Gateway to Muskoka, Gravenhurst is home to almost 13,000 people but doubles in size to a larger seasonal population of cottagers. Its home to many outdoor activities including hiking, boating, snowmobiling and more. Whether you’re looking for more adventure in your retirement or comfort in raising your family there is plenty of opportunity.

More recently there has been more people relocating to Gravenhurst to live the Muskoka lifestyle. Gravenhurst has a lower cost of living and residents live a balanced lifestyle of work and play. You can find various waterfront properties, bungalows with large lots, condos and rural neighborhoods all within a very affordable price.

The Township of Gravenhurst was home to a German prisoner-of-war camp called Camp 20.  Camp 20 held almost 500 prisoners. The prisoners worked various jobs around Gravenhurst, such as building a lighthouse in the park. The camp had a fenced in swimming area in the nearby lake, a small zoo and a garden. Now, all that’s left of the camp is the concrete pillars, a fire hydrant and the outline of a fence.
