Known as the Gateway to Muskoka, Gravenhurst is home to almost 13,000 people but doubles in size to a larger seasonal population of cottagers. The Township of Gravenhurst was home to a German prisoner-of-war camp called Camp 20.  Camp 20 held almost 500 prisoners. The prisoners worked various jobs around Gravenhurst, such as building a lighthouse in the park. The camp had a fenced in swimming area in the nearby lake, a small zoo and a garden. Now, all that’s left of the camp is the concrete pillars, a fire hydrant and the outline of a fence.
