Living in Lake of Bays
The Township of Lake of Bays has many smaller communities, but is anchored by the four hamlets of Baysville, Bigwin, Dorset and Hillside. The main population is just over 3,000, but that swells to over 11,000 seasonally. Tourism is the main industry of the Township, along with forestry and Aggregate mining. Because of the high seasonal population and draw for cottagers and travelers, you will find many artisan shops and studios to visit. The region is also home to many festivals and special events throughout the year.
Imagine sipping on your Mint Julep while hobnobbing with the likes of Clark Gable or Ernest Hemingway. Well, back in the day you could have at the Bigwin Inn, a resort in the region that ran from 1920 until the late 1960s. Found on Bigwin Island, this hotel resort was a draw for many of Hollywood’s elite. Even the Dutch royal family stayed for the summers from 1941 to 1945. The spectacular dining hall could hold up to 750 guests, and the dance pavilion was a draw for many musicians to come to the island and perform.
