On September 12, 1901, the Huronic, the first steel-hulled ship in Canada, was launched in Collingwood. The Ship building industry thrived in Collingwood from 1883 – 1986 which accounted for over 10% of the total labor force in the area.

    Although you cannot explore the island itself, the Nottawasaga Island and Lighthouse are a strong representation of the history in Collingwood and its roots as an industrial and manufacturing town. The lighthouse is set on a terrific backdrop and is great to check out if you’re on the water.
