Muskoka Lakes

The Township of Muskoka Lakes was originally centered around the timber industry.  However, when that resource became harder to maintain, tourism started to be the main economic driver of the township. The larger communities of Bala, Port Carling, and Windermere call Muskoka Lakes their home, along with many small hamlets.

Living in Muskoka Lakes

Muskoka lakes is a cottage country living hot spot but is home to almost 7,000 people year-round. It offers a balanced mixture of waterfront properties, rural areas and country settings and encourages more people to come to the area. Anchored by larger communities like Bala, Port Carling and Windermere, Muskoka lakes offers the sophistication of popular tourism all while protecting the character and natural beauty of the region.

Boating, hiking, cycling and relaxing on the dock are all popular activities. The region is rich in water surrounded by Lake Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau, and cottagers flock to the area from around the world.

In 1868, to encourage settlement, the Ontario’s Free Grants and Homestead Act opened up farmland for people to own in the region now known as the Township of Muskoka Lakes.  The draw of free land brought in many families who carved out their homes.  The land wasn’t very fertile, though, and timber and tourism became the economic driver of the region.
