Just north of Barrie, following along the Lake Simcoe shoreline as it curves northeast to Orillia, Oro-Medonte is an expansive township in the heart of Simcoe County. Shanty Bay got its name from the homes – the shanties – built by African American settlers who were loyal to the British Crown and moved northward into British North America. St. Thomas Anglican Church in Shanty Bay dates to 1842 and is one of the oldest churches in the area.
